Solving a Mouldy Ceiling Problem With A Fresh Solution

When it comes to mouldy ceilings, many homeowners are tempted to simply clean off the mould and hope the mould won't come back. While cleaning a mouldy ceiling is an essential first step when it coms to solving a mould issue, it often isn’t enough to stop the mould to come back and to fully restore the appearance and health of the space.

We have recently completed a project where we repainted a mouldy ceiling that the client thought it needed complete replacement, and the results were transformative.

Here’s why repainting is the most effective solution for dealing with mouldy ceilings.

When You Have A Persistent Mould Issue

Our client had a laundry ceiling plagued by mould (see pictures below). Over time, the black spots became darker and spreaded all over the ceiling, and repeated cleaning did little to resolve the issue. Cleaning alone can remove visible mould, but it often leaves behind stains if the mould problem is not solved as it doesn’t address the underlying problem. On top of that, if the paint is old or damaged, it provides an uneven and porous surface where mould can easily regrow.

Solving A Mould Problem With A Fresh Start with Repainting

We approached this project in three key steps:

  1. Thorough Cleaning and Preparation Before painting, we cleaned the ceiling thoroughly to kill the mould and prevent regrowth. We then allowed the surface to dry completely.

  2. Applying a Primer A primer is crucial for sealing the surface and preventing future mould growth. We used a dulux primer designed specifically for damp and humid environments.

  3. Repainting with Durable, Anti-Mould Paint Finally, we applied two coats of anti-mould paint. This type of paint helps resist mould growth, making it ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and other moisture-prone areas.

The Results

After completing the project, the laundry ceiling looked brand new. The client was thrilled not only with the visual transformation but also with the relief that replacing the ceiling wasn't going to be necessary.

Preventing Future Mould Issues

While repainting is highly effective, it’s also essential to address the root causes of mould. We adviced our client on how they could address the mould issue in her laundry to ensure there was plenty of ventilation in the room.
